Musical Interlude: Neal Hefti - The Odd Couple

Rounding out this impromptu trilogy of "tunes I didn't know had lyrics", here's a tune I knew as the theme from that old 70s sitcom with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall which I watched as a little kid.

I didn't find out the show was based on a play by Neil Simon until sometime in the mid-80s, when a friend's school was staging the play and they were auditioning.  I have no idea whether or not they got a part, we'd probably lost touch after that.  We weren't really that close.

That should do it for this year.  Join me after New Years Eve when I break out the New Years Resolutions and perhaps a more... modern... playlist.

Musical Interlude: Johnny Mandel - Suicide is Painless

I'll admit it.  I didn't know the tune I knew as "the M*A*S*H theme" had lyrics until hearing it for the first time, in the middle of the last decade, on Luxuriamusic.  Now I can't help singing the lyrics whenever M*A*S*H is on TV!

The title is a touchy subject for me, especially during the holiday season, as I've lost several friends to suicide over the years.  Having said that (and not wanting to get into it further), I do rather enjoy the song.  It sounds like a Beach Boys tune!

All of us (me) here at C&S wish our readers all the best for the holiday season, and we will be back in a few days when we talk about... never mind.  It's a surprise!

Musical Interlude: Van Dyke Parks - Number Nine

Today's musical interlude is another tune I heard on Luxuriamusic years ago, and has stayed with me since.

There's no backstory to this one - if I remember correctly, I first heard it while hungover and recovering from a social outing the previous night.

Enjoy this 1960s take on Beethoven's Ninth!
