Retrochallenge 2010

Preamble

[back to Retrochallenge hub]

06/25/10:

Less than a week to go. In just over five days, this 'ere Win2K box gets shut off, and my favourite retro-system (my Amiga 2000) can reclaim its rightful spot on my office desk.

Our friendly UPS driver dropped off a package for me today. Some of the non-computer equipment I ordered for one of my projects arrived! Have yet to decide where I'm going to set up shop - basement or garage. Either way, I'll have to move a bunch of stuff in order to set up an efficient work space. Knowing me, I'll end up using both garage and basement.

Saw some great Amiga hardware on sale online recently, something that would benefit my projects immensely. Unfortunately I need the money for a bench vise and drill press, so I had to pass it up. Too bad, PPC cards for the A4000 don't come along as often as I'd like...

On a somewhat related note, I fired up my Amiga 1200 to make sure she still worked (she does). Played a few games and got her online for the first time in over a decade, but didn't do anything major... gotta save that for July 1st!

An any rate, I gotta go - the rebroadcast of the Chile vs Spain match is underway. The World Cup beckons again...

06/21/10:

Well, apart from one component, I've managed to collect all the equipment I'm going to need for my various projects (as opposed to things I want). Unfortunately for me, funding is rather tight right now, so I can't pick up the final piece of the puzzle until June 30th. I'm not worried though... this particular piece won't come into play until the RC's third week. Need to brush up on a few things (and build a few more) before I can use it in the best possible manner.

The temptation to start early is unbearable, but I find the longer I wait, the more ideas I come up with (or the more the older ideas are refined). I may attempt to fix my ailing Sega Game Gear if I have the time... likely to be something to do if/when I need a break from my other projects. Most of my plans are pretty diverse, though, so there's enough to keep me from getting bored or suffering my usual burnout two weeks into the RC ;)

06/03/10:

Sent in my entry today.

I've been looking forward to this year's event. My original plan was to upgrade my Coco3 (aka Mira) and learn how to do things in OS-9 (or NitrOS-9). However, I can't justify spending the money on a machine I'll only use for two months out of the year. Instead, I tracked down a couple of pieces of equipment for some of my machines that see regular use, equipment that will not only solve a problem or two, but will also increase my productivity.

As some of you know, I use my TRS-80 Model 100 portable (aka Gibraltar) in my daily life, writing my (now defunct) blog and doing up quick sales quotes at work. Well, Gibraltar has, for all intents and purposes, been maxxed out as far as feasible upgrades go, so I turned my attention to my TRS-80 Model 4P (aka Sigrid). I use Sigrid for general word processing and organizational duties, but she has a few handicaps that prevent me from using her to her full potential. One of this year's projects will be to rectify those handicaps, or come up with functional work-arounds.

Lastly, I will create ART! Not just my usual Amiga photo galleries that I so love doing, but something rather creative...

TTYL,

CJ
